Pastorale (1980) is a significant work from Salvador Dalí's late-career engagement with one of the great narratives of Western literature, Miguel de Cervantes' Don Quixote de la Mancha. Executed as an etching and aquatint in colours on premium Japon paper, the work belongs to the celebrated Historia de Don Quichotte de la Mancha suite - a print series that stands as one of the most ambitious graphic achievements of Dalí's final decade and a definitive statement in his long mastery of the intaglio tradition.
Where many works within Dalí's Quixote canon dwell on the knight's feverish delusion and heroic folly, Pastorale assumes a markedly contemplative register. The composition retreats into what might be described as interior pastoral space - a dreamlike terrain in which the sun-bleached plains of La Mancha are refracted through Dalí's long-developed paranoid-critical method, dissolving the boundary between observed landscape and psychological projection. The stillness here is deliberate and charged; it is the silence before or after the charge, a resting of the knight's tortured imagination against the timeless rhythms of the Spanish countryside.
Technically, the work demonstrates the full command Dalí brought to printmaking in this period. The Japon paper - prized for its silken surface and exceptional receptivity to ink - allows the etched lines to hold with precision whilst the aquatint passages build atmosphere and tonal depth with painterly subtlety. The result is a composition of considerable refinement, one that rewards sustained looking.
The edition is hand-signed and numbered by the artist in pencil, and is accompanied by a Creed Fine Art certificate of authenticity. As an Artist's Proof, this impression sits outside the standard numbered edition, conferring a heightened rarity consistent with the most sought-after impressions of any print series.
Pastorale represents a mature artist in total command of his medium, producing work that is simultaneously rooted in art-historical tradition - the pastoral genre, the literary illustration, the Spanish golden age - and unmistakably, irreducibly Dalínian.
Works from Dalí's Don Quixote series - the thematic lineage to which Pastorale belongs - have been exhibited at the Fundació Gala-Salvador Dalí, Púbol; The Dalí Museum, St. Petersburg; and the Antonio Pérez Foundation, Cuenca. Related works are held in the permanent collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum, London.
