Grannies (2006) is one of the most celebrated and enduring works in Banksy's print catalogue - a two-colour screenprint that deploys his signature stencil technique in the service of a characteristically subversive visual joke. Two elderly women sit knitting in domestic contentment, their jumpers bearing the legends "Thug For Life" and "Punks Not Dead" - the full force of countercultural rebellion absorbed and repurposed by the most unlikely of subjects.
The work is quintessential Banksy in its construction: the image is disarming before it is confrontational, drawing the viewer in with warmth and familiarity before delivering its punchline. The grannies are rendered with genuine affection - they are not figures of mockery but of quiet celebration, their defiant slogans a reminder that rebellion is not the exclusive preserve of youth. It is one of the few Banksy prints that generates as much warmth as provocation, and it is no accident that it has become one of his most universally loved images.
Published in 2006 by Pictures on Walls, London - the print imprint that issued the majority of Banksy's most significant early editions - Grannies was released in an unsigned edition of 500 on Arches 88 wove paper, alongside a signed edition of 150. Each impression from the unsigned edition is numbered in pencil and bears the blindstamp of Pictures on Walls. This impression is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity issued by Pest Control Office - Banksy's own authentication body and the primary authority for verifying the provenance of his printed works.
