Dog Leg Study (1982-83/2019) is a screenprint on Somerset Satin paper published by the Estate of Jean-Michel Basquiat in 2019 - one of four prints comprising the suite Wolf Sausage, King Brand, Dog Leg Study and Undiscovered Genius, each translating a key work from Basquiat's most significant period into a strictly limited collectible edition.
At the centre of the composition is a diagrammatic comparison of a dog's leg and a human foot - a characteristic Basquiat move rooted in his childhood encounter with Gray's Anatomy and his lifelong engagement with the body as a site of vulnerability, power, and racial politics. The anatomical diagram is surrounded by the full vocabulary of his visual language: skull-like faces, an all-seeing eye, a coin, a clock, and dense passages of handwritten text referencing notable Black icons including boxers Sugar Ray Robinson and Jersey Joe Walcott, alongside recurring phrases from his personal mythology - "world famous" and "all beef." Text and image operate in constant tension, the clinical language of anatomy invaded by the urgency of lived experience. It is one of the most complete single-sheet expressions of the concerns that defined his entire practice.
This impression is numbered, stamped and signed by Lisane Basquiat and Jeanine Heriveaux, Co-Administrators of the Estate of Jean-Michel Basquiat - Basquiat's sisters and the primary custodians of his legacy - placing it at the most desirable tier of the edition. It is accompanied by a card issued by the Estate of Jean-Michel Basquiat, signed by both Co-Administrators.
