Marilyn (after F&S II.23) is a screenprint on museum board published by Sunday B. Morning — the most documented and most conceptually layered reproduction project associated with Andy Warhol's legacy — presented here in the distinctive mint colourway that is among the most striking of the ten variants in the Marilyn series.
The Sunday B. Morning story begins with Warhol himself. After producing his celebrated Marilyn, Flowers, and Campbell's Soup Cans series through his own Factory Additions publishing imprint, Warhol entered into discussions with two anonymous friends in Belgium about producing new editions of his most famous works. He provided them with the original photo negatives and colour codes - the same materials used to produce the canonical editions - and authorised them to publish reproductions under the Sunday B. Morning name, complete with the instruction to "Fill in your own signature." The project was, characteristically, both a commercial arrangement and a conceptual statement: a deliberate continuation of Warhol's lifelong interrogation of authorship, originality, and mechanical reproduction.
The image is based on Warhol's iconic 1967 Pink Marilyn - catalogued as Feldman & Schellmann II.31 - one of ten colour variants in the Marilyn suite that remain among the most sought-after prints of the twentieth century. The hot pink ground, acid yellow hair, and magenta lips are among the most immediately recognisable colour combinations in the history of art. Sunday B. Morning prints are produced on museum board using archival inks from the same processes and negatives Warhol provided, and are noted in the Feldman & Schellmann Catalogue Raisonné as an authorised edition.
The current edition is identifiable by the distinctive blue ink stamps on the verso - Published by Sunday B. Morning and Fill in your own signature - distinguishing it from the earlier black stamp editions of the 1970s. Each impression is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity issued by Sunday B. Morning.
