Produced for Banksy's 2019 Gross Domestic Product project, Welcome Mat stitches the word "WELCOME" from fabric salvaged from life vests abandoned on Mediterranean beaches — many of them counterfeit devices sold by smugglers to migrants crossing to Europe. Made in collaboration with the refugee support organisation Love Welcomes, the work turns a familiar symbol of domestic hospitality into a pointed statement on the migrant crisis, borders, and the true cost of "welcome."

Welcome Mat is one of the most quietly devastating works to emerge from Banksy's Gross Domestic Product project - a pop-up "shop" the artist launched in South London in 2019, ostensibly to assert copyright control over his own imagery, but which doubled as a platform for pointed social commentary disguised as homewares.

At first glance, it is simply a doormat: the word "WELCOME" stitched in bold orange lettering across a neutral base. Look closer, and the material tells the real story. Each letter is hand-stitched from fabric salvaged from life vests discarded on Mediterranean beaches - many of them counterfeit flotation devices sold by people smugglers to migrants attempting the crossing to Europe, garments that, as Banksy's own studio noted, "don't actually float."

Placed at the threshold of a home, the mat becomes a loaded object: an everyday symbol of hospitality constructed from the debris of a humanitarian crisis. The work was produced in collaboration with Love Welcomes, an organisation supporting displaced women in refugee camps in Greece, and proceeds from its sale were directed toward services for refugees - extending the piece's critique into an act of direct material support.

Welcome Mat exemplifies Banksy's recurring strategy of embedding urgent political content within familiar, domestic forms, forcing a confrontation between comfort and crisis in a single glance. It stands as one of the artist's most affecting statements on migration, borders, and the ethics of hospitality, and remains among the most sought-after pieces from the GDP release.
